Generate the ideal nap schedule for your toddler (12 months โ 3 years) โ including when to nap, how long, and when they might be ready to transition or drop naps.
The toddler years (12 months to 3 years) are defined by nap transitions and the gradual consolidation of sleep into a single midday nap. Understanding when and how to navigate these transitions โ rather than forcing them โ results in smoother sleep and happier toddlers.
The 2-to-1 nap transition is one of the most challenging for families. Signs of readiness: consistently fighting or refusing the second nap, second nap causing a very late bedtime (after 8 PM), naps taking much longer to initiate, or nighttime sleep extending when on 1 nap. The transition often takes 4โ6 weeks and involves some day-to-day variability. An earlier bedtime (6:30โ7 PM) on 1-nap days prevents overtiredness during the adjustment period.
Most toddlers are ready to drop their nap between 3โ4 years. Signs: consistently taking 30+ minutes to fall asleep at naptime, falling asleep easily at naptime but then not sleeping until 9โ10 PM, nighttime sleep extending significantly when nap is skipped. "Quiet time" (30โ60 minutes of rest in room) is a valuable bridge that maintains the restorative benefit without requiring actual sleep.
