The school performance implications are direct: memory consolidation for academic content requires adequate slow-wave sleep; emotional regulation (affecting classroom behavior, peer relationships, and frustration tolerance) requires adequate REM sleep; and sustained attention (fundamental to learning in classroom environments) degrades rapidly with sleep restriction. Children who chronically undersleep are at significantly higher risk for ADHD diagnosis -- a finding that has led to recommendations to evaluate sleep quality before initiating ADHD medication in children showing attention difficulties.
